ALASKA MORAVIAN CHURCH
2006 PROVINCIAL SYNOD – JANUARY 23 – 27, 2006 Bethel, Alaska
Synod Theme: “Freedom in Christ”
Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
Praise to God our Blessed Lord and Savior, for he is the only reason we were put on this earth to work and to do his will.
The Anchorage Moravian Church was represented by The Anchorage Moravian Church Pastor William “Doc” Nicholson and by Anchorage Moravian Church Delegate; Carrie Anvil-Kiana.
The 2006 Synod was attended by 23 Alaska Moravian Church congregations and 1 Fellowship, and 5 Youth Delegates from various villages, with a total of 58 Pastors, Lay Pastors, District Pastors and chosen Delegates for each church congregation.
I had the pleasure of attending the 2006 Synod for the first time. I have gained much valued experience, insight and appreciation for all the hard work everyone does for their home churches and communities. Although decisions and resolutions were made for the Alaska Moravian Churches, it is our Lord and Savior that deserves all the glory and honor. My outlook on my walk with the Lord has changed another degree to the better.
These are my personal highlights for the 2006 Snyod.
- Welcoming Rev. Joseph Albrite Jr. back to the fold and serving at the Akiak Moravian Church. ( He is Grace Harold’s brother and William Sallaffie’s Uncle)
- Reopening of the Moravian Church Bookstore, with Lydia Kinegak as the Moravian Bookstore Manager.
- The new Christian Education Director Rick Wagner that was hired to get the Youth participation in all the Moravian Churches.
- The Youth participants sent a resolution to the Synod in their hungering for more of the bible scriptures and the word. The Youth in the villages and towns are sending out a message that they too love our Lord and Savior and are eagerly reaching out for more of the gospel in wanting longer messages from their selected special speakers.
- The Alaska Moravian Seminary is well and growing. There was a very positive and uplifting report from the Dean of the Alaska Moravian Seminary Rev. Ray W. Caldwell. The wide variety of instructors coming to the seminary to teach the students with all the instructors teaching without a fee, and with a wide variety of classes being offered.
- The ongoing project of the Yup’ik Old Testament Translation by our own Yup’ik people. Peter Green, Jones Anaver, Alice Fredson, Mary Jane Mann, Elsie Mather, John P. Andrew and Elsie Jimmie, with the help of proof readers, Ringo Jimmy and our own Ina Carpenter.
- The Moravian Board of World Missions growing in other countries in the present time Russia and Labrador and many yet to come. Our Lord is opening doors where people have died to hear the word of God. The Alaska Moravian Church is very fortunate to have Rev. Tom Conrad in playing a big role in carrying on God’s will in his passion to get the Word of God to other countries.
There is more information I would like to share with you, but with time restraints I will end with a praise from Psalm 107: 8 “ Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!”
